HELPING VETERANS
Three Rivers Legal Services plays a vital role in helping veterans access the legal services and support they need. If eligible, we can provide free or low-cost legal assistance to individuals who may not be able to afford the services of a private attorney.
For many veterans, the transition back to civilian life can be difficult, and they may face a range of legal challenges. Legal aid organizations can help veterans navigate these challenges by providing assistance with a wide range of legal issues, including:
-Discharge upgrades: Many veterans may be eligible to have their military discharge upgraded, which can improve their access to benefits and services. Legal aid organizations can provide assistance with the complex process of applying for a discharge upgrade.
-Disability benefits: Many veterans are eligible for disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), but the application process can be complicated and time-consuming. Legal aid organizations can provide assistance with completing the necessary paperwork and advocating for veterans to receive the benefits they are entitled to.
-Housing: Legal aid organizations can assist veterans who are facing eviction or who are having difficulty securing affordable housing. This can include providing assistance with completing rental applications, negotiating with landlords, and advocating for the rights of veterans in housing court.
-Consumer protection: Veterans may be targeted by predatory lenders and other unscrupulous businesses, and legal aid organizations can provide assistance with issues related to consumer protection and financial fraud.
-Family law: Legal aid organizations can provide assistance with a wide range of family law issues, including divorce, child custody, and domestic violence.!

We accept referrals for veterans and their families from the following non-profit organizations under funding provided through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.

Here is an example of how Three Rivers Legal Services was able to help a Veteran in need:
Asking for help wasn’t easy for Jerry, and neither was the path that led him there. The disabled veteran, who found himself alone on a cot in a rural homeless shelter, and chronically ill, both mentally and physically, was simply worn out from the battle (both the ones he fought on behalf of his country and the one he was trying to fight for himself). The once strong, competent war hero did not know where to turn. As he began to age, his conditions compounded with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), severe cognitive and emotional stress, high blood pressure and other physical impairments. When he did attempt to navigate the often-congested Social Security system, he was constantly bombarded with barriers with few resources to overcome them.
Jerry’s outlook was renewed after working with our experienced attorneys at Three Rivers Legal Services. After seeking supplemental security income (SSI) for nearly two years, Jerry was awarded not only a monthly SSI benefit but a retroactive award that enabled him to replace a temporary shelter cot with a home of his own as well as restore his dignity and independence.
