Opportunities in Gainesville

For UF Law Students

The Gainesville office of Three Rivers Legal Services, Inc. has several volunteer opportunities for UF Law Students. We offer several clinics, through which law students are able to assist our clients on a wide range of issues. Some of our previous clinics include:

  • Housing
  • Pro-Se Divorce
  • Sealing /Expunction of Records
  • Outreach
  • Outreach to the Spanish Speaking Community
  • Elder Law
  • Homeless Outreach
  • General Legal Intake

The clinics offered vary from semester to semester, but Housing, Pro Se Divorce, and General Intake are staples, usually offered every Fall and Spring Semester. Further, this is not an exhaustive list; we are constantly trying to develop new clinics to match student interests with community needs.

Our volunteer clinic opportunities are designed around the UF Law School Schedule. This means that the deadline for registering for these clinics is early in the semester. We usually send out information and registration information on the clinics being offered in a particular semester through the student affairs and career services listserv within two to three weeks of the beginning of the semester. If you miss the deadline for registering, feel free to e-mail us at pblc@trls.org, as we may still be able to fit you into one of our clinics (depending on availability and opportunity for training). If for some reason you do not receive our clinic information through one of the law school listservs, please contact us at pblc@trls.org and we will e-mail you this information.

NOTE: These clinics are not associated with the clinics offered by the UF Law School. In the UF Law School clinics, students become Certified Legal Interns, can actually practice law under the supervision of a supervising attorney, and receive law school credit. Three Rivers clinic volunteers may be eligible to receive a pro-bono certificate from UF Levin College of Law, but do not receive law school credit or CLI status.

For Non Law Student Volunteers

If you are in an undergrad or graduate program and are interested in volunteering with us contact us at pblc@trls.org. We will try our best to provide you with a meaningful volunteer experience.

About Our Student Program

Three Rivers Legal Services utilizes Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Attorneys to recruit, train, and supervise law student volunteers to provide limited and brief legal assistance to low income persons in the 17 county service area. Volunteer opportunities are available in the Gainesville and Jacksonville offices.

We work through The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Program which was created in 2003 to improve access to justice by increasing the availability of pro bono legal services. The Program is supported by an AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and works in conjunction with Legal Aid organizations nationwide. One Promise Florida

One PromiseThe focus of the One Campaign is to engage more attorneys in providing pro bono legal services through their local legal aid programs by taking on ONE case. Put simply, the One Campaign speaks directly to the number one issue that many attorneys cite as an obstacle to providing pro bono legal services: time. Through the One Campaign attorneys are encouraged to take One case where they can utilize their unique skills to help regular citizens navigate the law. The One Campaign will also highlight both state and local opportunities that attorneys can take advantage of to provide these pro bono services.
